Apple has changed its GPS system so that the as-yet-unfinished Vaðlaheiði tunnel is no longer shown to be a recommended driving route between Akureyri and Húsavík in North Iceland, RÚV reports. Though the tunnel is still several months from completion, Apple’s GPS services had already updated it as a viable route between Akureyri and Húsavík.
Sunna Kristjana Zóphaníasdóttir, the tunnel’s construction manager, said that people had been attempting to drive through the tunnel since last summer, ignoring the No Entry signs posted along the way. She said that driving through the tunnel was extremely dangerous, but workers were not able to close it off completely because of on-going construction. Sunna had tried to contact Apple three times about the matter, but had had no success.
The Apple GPS system has been updated now so that while the tunnel still appears on their maps, it is no longer shown to be an accessible route.
