Iceland's World Cup Squad Announced

The Icelandic squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia has been announced.

Coach Heimir Hallgrímsson introduced the 23 players who will represent Iceland in Russia this summer. The press conference was held in Laugardalsvöllur, the national stadium. Iceland is the first competing side in the World Cup to officially announce its squad.

“This is the team that we feel will give us the best chance in Russia”, commented Heimir.

The official World Cup squad:

Goalkeepers: Hannes Þór Halldórsson, Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson, Frederik Schram

Defenders: Kári Árnason, Ari Freyr Skúlason, Ragnar Sigurðsson, Hörður Björgvin Magnússon, Birkir Már Sævarsson, Sverrir Ingi Ingason, Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson

Midfielders: Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson, Birkir Bjarnason, Arnór Ingvi Traustason, Emil Hallfreðsson, Gylfi Sigurðsson, Ólafur Ingi Skúlason, Rúrik Gíslason, Samúel Kári Friðjónsson, Aron Einar Gunnarsson

Forwards: Alfreð Finnbogason, Jón Daði Böðvarsson, Björn Bergmann Sigurðarson, Albert Guðmundsson

Heimir can call upon replacements from a 35 man squad.

Iceland will play two friendly fixtures on home soil as part of their preparations for the World Cup. The matches will take place on the 2nd of June, versus Norway, and on the 7th of June versus Ghana. The Icelandic team will face off against Croatia, Argentina and Nigeria.
