Protesters in the Armenian capital of Yerevan took part in the so-called ‘Viking clap’ during a recent anti-government demonstration. Mbl.is was sent footage of the clap, which shows a large crowd of people standing together and chanting ‘Hu!’
The video was taken by Narek Mkrtchyan outside of the Armenian Ministry for Foreign Affairs. According to Mkrtchyan, some demonstrators are jokingly calling the protests the “Icelandic Revolution.”
Protests began a week ago in Armenia, following the selection of former president Serzh Sarkisian as prime minister. Sarkisian served as president for a decade from 2008 - 2018 and has the support of Russian president Vladamir Putin, who called to congratulate him on his appointment on Tuesday. Rallies that same day saw a turn-out of as many as 40,000 protestors and have been ongoing since.
