Icelandic footballer Gylfi Sigurðsson has suffered a knee injury and will be out of play for weeks or months, according to a post on his Facebook page. RÚV reported first.
The injury could prevent the midfielder from playing for Iceland in the 2018 World Cup this June. It is the first time Iceland qualifies for the tournament, making it by far the smaller country to do so.
Gylfi plays for Premier League club Everton and represented Iceland at the team’s first major tournament, EUFA Euro 2016, where the country reached the quarter finals.
