Popular downtown café and bar The Laundromat Café will be closing this Sunday at 11:00PM, after seven years of operation, mbl.is reports. Owner Friðrik Weisshappell Jónsson announced the closure on Facebook on Friday, saying that he had not been able to come to an agreement with license holder Þvottakaffi Ltd, but that he hoped to open the café again in a new location soon.
The Laundromat Café is a combination café and laundromat that until now, has had several locations in Copenhagen, Denmark and one in Reykjavík. The original Copenhagen location opened in 2004, while the Icelandic café opened at Austurstæti 9 in 2011, and has operated in that location since. It is also currently the only operational laundromat outside of a hostel or campsite in the country.
“I want to thank everyone who has visited us throughout the years in one of the most beautiful buildings in Reykjavík,” wrote Friðrik on Facebook. “...For a fantastic reception from the very first day and also everyone I have met and worked with during this time—it was a damn lot of fun! Thank you...”
Friðrik wrote that the parties involved were having difficulties coming to an agreement at present, but that the café would probably “open very soon in a different location.”
